Stock Profit and Loss Calculator: Easy 3-Step Check

You buy 200 shares at ₹1,000 and sell at ₹1,200. The screen says ₹40,000 profit, but after charges and short-term tax the money that reaches you is closer to ₹31,191. A stock profit and loss calculator shows that gap in seconds, before you place the order.

How do you use this stock profit and loss calculator in 3 steps?

  1. Choose the trade type: delivery held 12 months or less, delivery held longer, or intraday.
  2. Enter the buy price, sell price and quantity.
  3. Read the profit before tax, the estimated tax and the profit after tax, along with the break-even sell price.

Charges are estimated from Zerodha’s published rates by default. If you have your contract note, switch to Enter my own total and type the figure. Stock Charcha keeps both options so the result can match your own trade.

How does the stock profit and loss calculator work out the result?

It works in three steps: gross profit, then charges, then tax.

Profit after tax = Sell value − Buy value − Charges − Tax

Charges use the same formulas as Stock Charcha’s brokerage calculator, so both pages agree on the same trade. Tax uses these rates, checked on 3 October 2026.

Trade typeTax treatment used here
Delivery, 12 months or less20% short-term capital gains tax
Delivery, more than 12 months12.5% on gains above ₹1.25 lakh a year
IntradayYour slab rate, as business income
All tradesPlus 4% cess on the tax

Rates can change with each Budget, so verify them on the Income Tax Department website before you file.

What does a worked example look like?

Take 200 shares bought at ₹1,000 and sold at ₹1,200, held for under a year. These figures are illustrative.

ItemValue
Gross profit₹40,000
Estimated charges₹501.80
Net profit before tax₹39,498
Estimated tax₹8,307
Profit after tax₹31,191
Break-even sell price₹1,002.30

Tax takes about 21% of the profit and charges take another 1.3%. The stock must reach ₹1,002.30 before you earn a rupee.

How much does the trade type change your tax?

The same ₹40,000 price gain can leave very different amounts in your hand.

Trade typeEstimated taxProfit after tax
Delivery, 12 months or less₹8,307₹31,191
Delivery, more than 12 months₹0₹39,498
Intraday at a 20% slab₹8,293₹31,577
Intraday at a 30% slab₹12,440₹27,431

Held beyond a year, the whole gain sits inside the ₹1.25 lakh exemption and the tax falls to zero. That one number, ₹8,307 against ₹0 on the same trade, is the strongest argument in this stock profit and loss calculator for patience.

Why is STT the one charge you cannot deduct?

Brokerage and exchange charges reduce your taxable gain in this calculator. STT, the securities transaction tax, does not for capital gains. On this trade it comes to ₹440, and it is taxed along with the profit.

This is why the tax shown is slightly higher than a simple 20.8% of your net profit. For intraday trades, STT is treated as a business expense, so the calculator deducts it in full.

What happens when a trade ends in a loss?

Sell the same shares at ₹900 and the loss is about ₹20,440 after charges. The stock profit and loss calculator shows no tax, because there is no gain to tax.

A loss can generally be set off against gains and carried forward if you file your return on time, but the rules differ by trade type. Ask a chartered accountant how to use it.

What does this stock profit and loss calculator leave out?

It ignores surcharge, your other income, TDS and per-lot matching of shares bought on different dates. It also skips the grandfathering rule for shares bought before 1 February 2018, AMC charges and futures and options. For several lots, try our stock average calculator.

This is an estimate, not tax advice. Investments in the securities market are subject to market risks. Read all related documents carefully before investing. At Stock Charcha we show the rate table and the date checked so you can see exactly what the maths assumes.

Where should you go after using the stock profit and loss calculator?

Check the return on a longer holding with the CAGR calculator, or the XIRR calculator if you bought in several lots. Read how to do intraday trading and the top investing mistakes to avoid.

Frequently asked questions

Is brokerage included in the profit and loss result?

Yes. By default the calculator estimates every charge from Zerodha’s published rates, including STT, exchange fees, GST, SEBI charges, stamp duty and DP charges. You can replace the estimate with the total from your own contract note.

How is a share held for exactly 12 months taxed?

Long-term treatment needs a holding period of more than 12 months. A share sold on or before the 12-month mark is short-term, so the 20% short-term rate applies. Check the exact purchase and sale dates on your statement.

Is intraday profit taxed as capital gains?

Intraday equity trades are generally treated as speculative business income and taxed at your slab rate, not as capital gains. The calculator uses the slab rate you enter. Confirm the treatment for your situation with a chartered accountant.

Does the stock profit and loss calculator include surcharge?

No. It adds the 4% health and education cess but leaves out surcharge, which applies only at higher incomes. It also ignores your other income, so your real tax bill may differ from the estimate.

Where can I find my exact charges?

Your broker’s contract note and ledger list every charge for each trade. Add them up, switch the Charges option to Enter my own total, and the calculator will use your actual figure instead of the estimate.
